practically alone. The only three MEPs from the liberal group who have voted in favor of the motion of Margarita de la Pisa (Vox), have been those of Ciudadanos. Half of the dozen MEPs of the European PP who have voted in favor of the extraordinary debate requested by the extreme right, have been from the PP of Feijóo. PP, Vox and Ciudadanos have failed in their attempt to include an extraordinary debate in the plenary session of the European Parliament that is being held in Strasbourg around some manipulated words of the Minister for Equality, Irene Montero, by the extreme right on sexual education .
In the end, just 72 MEPs have voted in favor of Vox’s request seconded by PP and Cs to debate a hoax, while 252 have been registered against and 14 abstentions. The rest of the Spanish MEPs have voted against (PSOE, UP, PNV, ERC, Junts, Catalunya en Comú, BNG and Anticapitalistas).
The debate that Vox requested this Monday, a party that has decided to sue Minister Irene Montero in the Supreme Court for her manipulated words on sex education, is based on statements that the extreme right has twisted to imply that Irene Montero defended that minors had sexual relations with adults, when referring to their right to receive sexual education and, from the age of 16, to voluntarily interrupt a pregnancy without prior parental permission, something that is in line with the patient’s rights law .
In her petition, the far-right MEP Margarita de la Pisa, who took the floor at the opening of the plenary session in Strasbourg on Monday, spoke of “infamous statements about sexual relations of children with adults based on consent ”, something that the Minister of Equality never pronounced. De la Pisa has accused Montero of “wanting to corrupt” the children.
Miguel Urbán, MEP for Anticapitalistas, has taken the floor to respond to De la Pisa. “The extreme right does not care about the rights of children, his party voted against the investigation of the abuse of minors by the Church in the Spanish Parliament. I call to vote against so that the extreme right stops using this Parliament for their hatred and their lies”.
