A worker of the postal service of the United States (USPS, for its acronym in English) died on Tuesday after being attacked on Sunday by five dogs in Interlachen Lake, north of the state of Florida.
“We are saddened to announce the passing of the 61-year-old postal worker attacked by dogs on Sunday in Interlachen,” police said in a statement. a statement posted on Facebook and a subsequent press conference.
Police authorities said they went to the scene of the complaint where they found the woman, later identified as Pamela Jane Rock, who was bloodied on the floor.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has joined the ongoing “criminal death” investigation, an officer said at the news conference. The animals, he explained, remain in the custody of animal control and will be euthanized upon completion of the collection of relevant evidence.
Neighbors told officers that they came to the woman’s aid upon hearing her screams and that someone even fired shots into the air to scare away the animals.
The woman was treated immediately, transferred shortly after to the HCA Florida Putnam Hospital and later by plane to a specialized center in Gainesville, where she died on Tuesday.
“It is imperative that dog owners take responsibility for keeping their animals safe, for their safety and the safety of those around them,” Sheriff HD ‘Gator’ DeLoach said in the statement.
