The Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries of Ecuador, the Andean Community of Nations, and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), in response to concerns about the distortions imposed to economic recovery, the adverse effects of the still latent COVID-19 crisis, the scenario of uncertainty aggravated by the war in Ukraine, and its adverse effects on economic growth (high inflation and slowdown in global economic growth expectations), has scheduled the Webinar “Post-COVID Recovery in the Andean subregion and the Effects of the War in Ukraine” At such a meeting, ECLAC will present an analysis of the adverse effects that the region is already experiencing as a result of the war and the recent lower expectations of economic growth in China, one of its main markets. Among others, the presentation will cover the impacts on international prices of the main commodities exported by the region, the breakdown of the supply chain, mainly those originating in Russia and Ukraine, as well as the effects on agriculture and agribusiness derived from fertilizer shortages.
In addition to ECLAC, high-level delegates from each of the member countries of the Andean Community will participate. In a round table, they will present the measures they have been applying to mitigate the adverse effects of the COVID crisis, and the consequences of the war in Ukraine.
The activity will be sponsored by the project “Promoting sustainable development models in Latin American countries, a multidimensional approach in the Post-COVID-19 world” led by the International Trade and Integration Division, and which aims to promote sectoral recovery of intra- and extra-regional trade (including bi-regional relations with the European Union) through the promotion of sectors with greater productive complementarities in the member countries of each regional integration scheme on the one hand, as well as on the other, the promotion of concrete actions that can promote greater productive integration that is more inclusive in the various integration schemes.
The Seminar is part of the support that ECLAC has been providing to the Pro Tempore Presidency of Ecuador during the first half of 2022.
