Posco begins construction of traction motor core plant in Poland

Posco International has started construction of its new traction motor core plant in Brzeg, Opole Voivodeship, Poland according to advertisement the company. This plant, located on a 100,000 square meter plot of land, will be key in the production of essential components for the powertrain systems of most green vehicles, excluding those with traditional combustion engines.

Construction of the factory in Poland is scheduled to be completed by mid-2025, with the aim of starting commercial production of traction motor cores in the second half of next year. The plant will begin commercial operation by producing traction motor cores for around one million electric vehicles (EVs) manufactured by South Korea’s two major automakers, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, at their plants in Turkey and Slovakia.

Posco International also plans to establish new partnerships with European EV manufacturers and increase annual production of motor cores at the Polish plant to 1.2 million units by 2030. “It is significant to secure a production base in Europe, the forefront of the automotive industry.” ecological,” said a Posco International official. “Posco International will increase its cooperation with European car manufacturers to establish itself as a global supplier of green car parts.”

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, European sales of hybrid vehicles in 2023 increased by 28 percent year-on-year, reaching 3.4 million units.

With the plant in Poland, Posco International also aims to increase its annual traction motor core production capacity to 7.1 million units by 2030, which will account for 10 percent of the global traction motor core market.

Posco International currently has traction motor core production sites in Pohang, South Korea, Mexico and India.
