Portugal conveys Portuguese "solidarity" to Felipe VI after DANA

MADRID Nov. 2 () –

The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has had a telephone conversation with King Felipe VI to express the “solidarity” of the Portuguese people after the DANA that has left more than 200 dead in the Spanish east.

“The President of the Republic has spoken by telephone with Felipe VI to reinforce the solidarity of the Portuguese people following the recent news that reveals the extent of personal and material damage,” the Portuguese Presidency published in a statement.

Rebelo de Sousa has thus responded to the “dramatic events experienced in the sister country” and has highlighted the “remarkable response of the Spanish people to this unprecedented tragedy.”

Ten emergency workers left Porto on Friday to assist in rescue efforts. They are members of the Portuguese Search and Rescue Association with experience in disaster scenarios and have two trained dogs.

“Our idea is to try to get the dogs to work in search and rescue scenarios because we know that there are still people missing. We also carry equipment for hospitals,” said one of the team members, Pedro Baptista.

The Portuguese Government is prepared to send resources given that Spain, as announced this Saturday by the President of the Government Pedro Sánchez, who has requested help from the European Solidarity Fund and the use of other community support resources from the European Union .

Sánchez, it should be remembered, this Saturday raised the death toll from DANA to 211, the vast majority in the Valencian Community, without an official number of missing persons yet existing.
