May 26. () –
This Sunday at 7:00 a.m. (local time) the schools opened for the second round of the presidential elections in Lithuania, in which President Gitanas Nauseda is emerging as the most likely option based on the good results obtained in the first round. just two weeks ago.
In total, 1,895 voting centers have been set up for this second round, which comes after on May 12, President Nauseda won 44 percent of the votes compared to the almost 20 percent collected by Ingrida Simonyte.
This Sunday’s event evokes the confrontation already experienced in 2019, when Nauseda – independent but supported by the social democrats – gathered more than 66.5 percent of the votes against the conservative Simonyte, who a little more than a year later was appointed head of the Lithuanian Government.
Voting began on Friday for those Lithuanians over 70 years of age, sick, disabled or their caregivers who requested to cast their vote from home. According to calculations by the Central Electoral Commission, almost 600,000 people have the right to vote from home, although just under 100,000 have formally requested it.
According to the Lithuanian Electoral Code, the candidate who obtains the most ballots during the repeated voting will be elected, regardless of the number of voters participating in it. If both candidates obtained the same number of supports, the person who obtained the best results in the first round would become president.
