June 6 () –
The Polish Armed Forces reported this Thursday the death of the soldier who eight days ago was injured in a knife attack committed by a migrant who was trying to cross the border with Belarus, amid a rise in insecurity in the area and with constant confrontations.
“We regret to inform you that on June 6 in the afternoon at the Warsaw Military Medical Institute, surrounded by the support of family and colleagues, a soldier from the 1st Armored Brigade died after being stabbed,” the Armed Forces reported in a message on their website. social network account
“Despite the help provided in the area of the bandit attack on the border with Belarus and the efforts of doctors, his life could not be saved,” lament the military authorities.
For his part, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the victim. “The young soldier Mateusz gave his life in defense of the Polish border. The homeland and compatriots will not forget this sacrifice,” he acknowledged.
Expressions of regret have continued throughout the day, including that of the Minister of Defense, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. “His sacrifice and devotion to his country are an example of the greatest bravery (…) Honor to his memory!”, he has written in X’s account of him.
On May 28, according to the official version, the victim was attacked with a knife when he tried to stop a group of migrants from trying to cross into Poland. One of them stuck the weapon in the chest of the soldier, who was also hit with stones when he was being treated by a border guard.
In recent months, the situation on the border has experienced a significant worsening, although since 2021 the Polish authorities have reported a significant increase in migrants crossing into their territory as a result of the permissiveness, if not connivance, of the Belarusian Government.
In the last few hours, the Polish president, Andrzej Duda, has announced for this Monday the convening of a National Security Council as a consequence of this increase in insecurity and after learning that three Polish soldiers were detained at the end of March and beginning of April for shooting at a group of migrants trying to cross from Belarus.
