A man linked to a homicide in New Hampshire was shot dead by police on a bridge connecting the state to Maine, and an 8-year-old boy was found shot to death inside the man’s car, prosecutors said Thursday.
The Piscataqua River bridge on Interstate 95 was closed from 3 a.m., with traffic backed up on both sides as drivers were diverted to two other bridges. The Piscataqua bridge connects Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Kittery, Maine.
The incident appeared to have begun overnight with a man shooting a woman dead at a home in Troy, New Hampshire, about 100 miles away in the western part of the state, and then driving to the bridge, prosecutor John Formella said in a statement.
“Early in the morning, police engaged in a confrontation with the adult male on a bridge in an incident that resulted in the man being shot and killed. The Maine District Attorney’s Office is now investigating the officer-involved incident,” he added.
“Police on the bridge also found an 8-year-old boy shot to death” in the man’s vehicle, the statement said. “The exact circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”
The population was not in danger and the bridge will remain closed in both directions due to the investigation, the statement said.
None of those involved have been publicly identified.
Between 70,000 and 80,000 vehicles use the Piscataqua Bridge daily, according to data from the Maine Department of Transportation.
