The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a criminal investigation into the officer who punched and kicked a suspect in the head at Manchester Airport in footage that was quickly shared on social media.
The investigation will determine whether the case is referred to the Crown Prosecution Service and whether the officer involved in this possible episode of police violence should face disciplinary measures. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) suspended the accused on Tuesday after videos of his actions came to light.
Footage shows a uniformed police officer, holding a taser, kicking and stamping on a suspect lying on the floor at Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2. Another video shows him pepper-spraying another man before knocking him to the ground.
Manchester police said three of their officers involved in the incident had been injured, including a female officer who suffered a broken nose. Four men were arrested, according to information reported by British television channel Sky News.
The incident sparked widespread criticism, with dozens of protesters gathering outside Rochdale Police Station in north Manchester midweek, chanting “GMP, disgraceful.” Local politicians have called for calm.
