Police accused of femicide must face Ecuadorian justice

The dismissed lieutenant of the Ecuadorian Police, Germán Cáceres, will have to face the Ecuadorian justice, because he is accused of murder his wife, a well-known lawyerinside a police school, last September.

This noon, the victim’s mother, Elizabeth Otalvo, filed a private accusation against Cáceres and another officer.

Cáceres was extradited on Tuesday from Colombia, according to the immigration authorities of that country, after being detained on December 30, in the township of Palomino (Guajira) in the midst of joint efforts carried out by the Colombian and Ecuadorian prosecutors, as well as by the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) and the Colombian Army.

Subsequently, Cáceres was transferred to Bogotá, where the procedures for his immediate expulsion were carried out.

It is presumed that the cadet instructor buried his wife’s body in a nearby wooded area and fled on September 11, a story that shocked the Andean country. María Belén Bernal was found dead 10 days after his disappearance, on a hill near the Higher Police School of the Ecuadorian capital.

The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, highlighted the cooperation of the government of his counterpart, Gustavo Petro, which allowed -in a special operation- to transfer the main person involved to Quito and later to Guayaquil.

“We have just captured and transferred to Ecuador the main suspect in the femicide of María Belén Bernal. Many believed that the police wanted to cover it up and did nothing. There are the results,” Lasso said.

According to Colombian Migration, the 29-year-old man posed as another person, which allowed him to work in a commercial establishment.
