This Tuesday, the Polish Foreign Ministry ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in the Polish city of Poznan after pointing out that Moscow was responsible for an attempted sabotage against Warsaw and its NATO allies in the context of the war in Ukraine.
The Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, explained in statements to the press that permits for the operation of the consulate will be withdrawn. “Its employees will be considered undesirable people in the Republic of Poland,” he added.
Sikorski has detailed that the Polish Prosecutor’s Office has presented “compelling” evidence of a sabotage attempt led by Russia and has demanded that the “hybrid war” be put to an end. “In the event of continuation, we reserve the right to take other decisive measures,” he concluded.
Later, in an interview with the TVP Info television channel, the Polish Foreign Minister assured that although they do not plan to expel the Russian ambassador, Sergei Andrev, from the country, the Government does not rule out this option.
“If we expel the ambassador, they, of course, will do the same. This has not happened yet, but if the acts of sabotage continue, it cannot be ruled out,” he said, adding that the closure of the consulate sends a “strong signal.” to Moscow.
Despite the expulsions of diplomats that have occurred in recent years and Poland’s tough stance against the invasion unleashed on February 24, 2022 by the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, both countries continue to maintain relations.
