Poland excludes Hungary from the formal inauguration of the presidency of the EU Council

MADRID Jan. 3 () –

The Government of Poland has excluded high-level representatives of the Government of Hungary from the guest list for the event that this Friday will formally begin the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union, in a direct result of the diplomatic crisis open between the two countries.

Hungary held the rotating European presidency in the second half of 2024, but there will be no formal passing of the baton to Poland. The Polish Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, has confirmed that the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, is not invited to the event held in Warsaw.

The Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, has also sent a note to the Hungarian Embassy in Warsaw to expressly confirm that the ambassador “was not welcome either”, so if he attended it should be through a diplomatic representative of a minor. level, reports the PAP news agency.

Sobkowiak-Czarnecka has confirmed that everything stems from the political asylum granted by Hungary to former Deputy Minister of Justice Marcin Romanowski, a member of the previous Government and accused of corruption and membership in a criminal group. The Hungarian authorities justified the measure by appealing to alleged political persecution.
