Poland detects toxic algae in the Oder River after the death of tons of fish

WARSAW, Aug. 18 () –

Polish researchers have detected traces of a toxic algae in water samples collected in the Oder River, where the reasons that would have led to the death of more than a hundred tons of fish in both Poland and Germany are still being examined.

The Polish Environment Minister, Anna Moskwa, has reported the detection of “rare microorganisms” in the samples supposedly derived from a type of algae that, when blooming, releases potentially deadly toxins for other living organisms.

The Government had also pointed out the possibility that this environmental disaster derived from a chemical spill and has offered a reward in exchange for information.

At the moment, there is still no exact cause and several laboratories from different countries have been involved in the investigations. German authorities have suggested that Poland did not act as quickly as it should in responding to the emergency.
