The Polish authorities have asked the United Nations on Tuesday to intervene so that Germany is responsible for paying reparations for the damage caused during World War II and have also requested a meeting with the Secretary General, António Guterres, to address the matter.
The country’s deputy foreign minister, Arkadiusz Mularczyk, has indicated that the government is taking “forceful” measures, which is why he has also asked to meet with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, according to information collected by the Radio 1 station.
Last September, the Polish authorities presented a report on the losses caused by Germany between 1939 and 1945. The amount of damage was estimated at 1.37 trillion euros.
Thus, he explained that this year, the Government plans to carry out an information campaign on this matter. “We have sent some 50 notes to the countries of the EU, the Council of Europe and NATO to address this issue, which is at the center of our cultural debates,” he asserted before indicating that they have also asked the Organization for help. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in relation to the stolen works of art.
“I have addressed the Council of Europe, and I think it is an important request,” he insisted, although he has reaffirmed that the most important is the one that has been presented to the UN. In addition, he has lamented that Germany does not even address the issue, something that “the world does not know.”
In this sense, he recalled that he is requesting intervention in this field to “create a platform that facilitates dialogue with Germany”. “What we have done for the last three months is to take steps to internationalize the case,” she added.
