However, according to series director Kunihiko Yuyama, the team was considering giving the character the same ability as Team Rocket’s Meowth, so it would be easy for him to communicate with people:

“At first we toyed with the idea of ​​Pikachu speaking like Team Rocket’s Meowth does. However, we thought it would be more realistic and interesting for them to communicate non-verbally, so that’s how it ended up being. I think it would be very difficult to find a human couple that understood each other as perfectly as Ash and Pikachu, but I hope that we have managed to portray a duo that everyone can look up to,” Yuyama said in an interview with animeday.
