What we can assure you is that PS VR2 has managed to place more units in its first six weeks on the market than PlayStation VR. Sony has not given specific figures and looking at the graph that accompanies the news it is difficult to determine, but the company affirms that during the same period of time PS VR2 has exceeded PS VR units sold by 8%. If Sony had the forecast that the new generation of virtual reality would surpass the first during the launch period, we can say that the objective has been met.
In the comparison, it must be taken into account that PlayStation VR hit stores in October 2016, three years after the debut of PlayStation 4, for a price of 399 euros. At that time PS4 had already exceeded 47 million units sold. For its part, PlayStation VR2 began its journey last February, when PlayStation 5 had celebrated its second anniversary a few months ago, with a starting price of 599 euros. As of March 31, 2023, PS5 had accumulated total sales of 38.4 million units.
PS VR2 has not only sold more units than PS VR in the same period of time, but has done so despite having a higher price and a smaller potential customer base. What we don’t know is how many units Horizon Call of the Mountain has sold, the game first party with which PlayStation Studios accompanied PS VR2 at its launch.
Regarding software, in the document Sony highlights that the catalog of games for PS VR2 will soon grow with titles such as Beat Saber, Behemoth, Crossfire: Sierra Squad, The Foglands, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Green Hell VR, Resident Evil 4 and Synapse among others. Some of these titles we may see in action tonight from 22:00 CEST during the PlayStation Showcase 2023, an event during which the games that will soon arrive on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 will be shown.
