With the purchase of Activision Blizzard and Bethesda much has been said about the expansion of Xbox Game Studios in the world of video games. However, the reality is that Sony is not far behind as it has taken out the portfolio for multiple companies such as Bungie, Bluepoint and Haven Studios. That said, it seems that Sony wants more and we have the proof in a recent signing.
According to information from Bloomberg Law, Sony Interactive Entertainment Corp. announced that it has hired Gregory McCurdy. He is a lawyer specialized in competition law who has had similar positions in companies as important as Uber.
“The world of video games is fascinating and it will be a great adventure for me,” McCurdy said in a message he posted on his LinkedIn. “I know a little bit from my days at Microsoft when they launched the Xbox to compete with the PlayStation.”

In case you don’t know, competition law is a branch of law better known as Antitrust Law in the United States. Its responsibility is to regulate trade through restrictions and laws that prevent the creation of monopolies and that there is healthy competition between companies.
This means that McCurdy will be responsible for helping Sony Interactive Entertainment get acquisitions for PlayStation, but keeping everything under the law. Let us remember that this type of acquisition is highly reviewed in the United States, so Sony and the rest of the companies must be careful if they do not want the law to throw away their multimillion-dollar agreements.
It should be noted that McCurdy appears to be an ideal signing for this. After all, this is the lawyer who handled Uber’s takeovers and mergers, which were heavily policed by antitrust laws. Furthermore, at Microsoft he was the first competition law lawyer in Europe, a position he held for 8 years.
