Planas praises the wine sector for its transition towards sustainable production models

MADRID 13 Oct. () –

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has praised the wine sector, which he has given as an example of transition towards a more sustainable production model, thanks to its technological advances and the constant modernization of its production processes.

This was made clear at the ministerial meeting of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) that was held this Sunday in Dijon (France).

The minister detailed the “important path taken” by the wine sector in its adaptation to the new circumstances derived from climate change and recalled that it is a sector that plays a driving role in the economy of many Spanish rural areas.

Planas has mentioned the commitment to ecological production, the incorporation of precision agriculture techniques, the use of renewable energy, the renovation and modernization of wineries and the use and valorization of by-products, which favor the development of the circular economy.

Among the advances, the minister has highlighted the vineyard, which fulfills important functions in the environmental field, such as soil conservation and carbon capture. Some aspects that, as he recalled, are increasingly considered by consumers and that, as is the case in general with food systems, the future of the sector involves sustainability in its triple dimension, environmental, economic and social.

The minister has pointed out as a future challenge the reduction of the climate footprint of wine production with crops that are more resistant to drought or extreme temperatures. Furthermore, he was pleased that this adaptation is one of the axes of the new strategic plan designed by the OIV for the period 2025-2029, which will be approved by the general assembly that will be held starting this Monday, October 14.

Planas has highlighted that the wine sector favors territorial preservation and ethnographic, social and cultural values. In his speech, the minister also referred to the necessary adaptation to new consumption patterns, called for moderate and responsible consumption, and expressed the support of the Spanish Government for the regulation of dealcoholized wines.

Likewise, he has been in favor of reinforcing the use of electronic media to respond to consumer demands for greater information on origin, traceability and health-related aspects.
