Picasso's shadows surround his 50th anniversary: should the artist's work be separated?

First modification:

Can you admire the work of a reprehensible and even contemptible artist? Can the work be separated from the artist? We approach these questions from a situation that is currently offered to us: 2023 will be Picasso’s year in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of his death and it also promises to be a time to review certain unknown or not so explored parts of his life.

2023 will be the year of Picasso in France and Spain with many events on the cultural agenda to commemorate the pictorial genius, but the Ministers of Culture of the two countries have already said that the hitherto not-so-addressed mistreatment of women will not be omitted. by the artist. The Picasso Year program includes 42 exhibitions in eight countries, 16 of them in Spain.

He is not the first artist nor surely the last. Even reputable names from other worlds such as science, in the case of Albert Einstein, have also been associated with shady, misogynistic and despot personalities. One of the latest cases of this type is that of rapper Kanye West: Is consuming the music of a declared admirer of Hitler harmless?

What to do with creators who, at the level of ideas and values, share ideologies that violate the rights and freedoms of different minorities? These are some of the approaches that we address in this edition of En Primera Plana together with our guests:

– Melissa Serrato, independent journalist specializing in culture.

– Gabriela Bravo, correspondent for Radio Cooperativa and CulturizArte.

– Grecia Cáceres, Peruvian writer, novelist and poet.
