PETRONAS responds to accusations of misleading advertisement about its environmental impact

Malaysia’s state-owned oil company, PETRONAS, has recently come under fire after the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled that one of its TV ads broadcast in the country in 2022 was “misleading” and “exaggerated the benefit total environmental impact” of the company’s business activities.

The ad in question, with a duration of 60 seconds, presented the efforts of PETRONAS in the field of sustainability and the transition towards a cleaner energy future.

However, the ASA has concluded that the content of the advertisement was misleading to viewers and did not accurately reflect the environmental benefits of PETRONAS’s operations.

PETRONAS has voiced his disagreement with the ASA’s decision, arguing that the ad was not intentionally misleading and that its sustainability efforts are genuine.

The company stressed that “it is committed to reducing carbon emissions, as established in its Net Zero Carbon Emissions Program by 2050 (NZCE50).”

In addition, PETRONAS has underscored its role as Malaysia’s national oil company, seeking to add value to the country’s hydrocarbon resources and support economic value creation through a reliable supply of energy.

In doing so, the company is also committing to pave the way towards a lower carbon future, in a fair and sustainable way.

“While PETRONAS is facing this controversy related to its UK announcement, the company continues its sustainability efforts and is determined to meet its carbon emission reduction targets,” the Malaysian company said.
