PETRONAS, in collaboration with ASEAN energy operators, government agencies and international organizations, has thrown out the ASEAN Energy Sector Methane Leadership Program (MLP).
This program aims to reduce methane emissions in the region and is supported by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).
The MLP is an 18-month initiative that will be carried out through master classes and workshops. Its main focus is to build capacity in ASEAN energy companies to strengthen their plans, objectives and financing options in reducing methane emissions.
This initiative supports the Global Commitment against Methane, aligning with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the Global Commitment on Methane.
The launch of the MLP took place during the Energy Asia 2023 conference, at a high-level session on methane. The Malaysian Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change highlighted the importance of private sector collaboration through this programme.

The ASEAN Energy Sector Methane Roundtable, established in 2021, also plays a key role in promoting collaboration on managing methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.
PETRONAS and JOGMEC also announced flagship collaborative methane reduction projects. These projects include methane quantification studies, solutions to achieve zero combustion and a possible collaboration in an electrification center.
These efforts align with Malaysia’s commitment to the Global Methane Pledge and international initiatives to reduce methane emissions.
Energy Asia’s Methane Program represents a significant advance in international collaboration for methane reduction. In addition, a Roundtable on Methane in the ASEAN Energy Sector and an ASEAN Deep Dive Technical Workshop on Methane Emissions Management were held as part of the Energy Asia 2023 conference.
PETRONAS and JOGMEC collaborate on flagship projects related to methane management, and these efforts are supported by various stakeholders and international organizations.
