The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, assured on Friday that his government is getting ready to declare an economic and social emergency due to the water crisis in the department of La Guajira, generated by the El Niño phenomenon.
“Given the causes that occur, mainly in the territory of La Guajira, around El Niño, the exacerbation with the climate crisis that raises the temperature on average 1.5 [grados] and brings an event that can make the phenomenon last over time, that generates an obvious emergency that is water, thirst. We are going to try to face it with specific measures,” explained the president, from Paris, France, where he is making an official visit at the Summit for a New World Financial Pact.
The president assured that the climate crisis could cause the El Niño phenomenon to last over time, creating an emergency due to “water scarcity” and “thirst.”
Next week, Petro will lead the day called “Government with the people” from the department of La Guajira, where he will attend to the main needs of that population, he said.
