The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro highlighted in his year-end message that in 2024 his country became the third in Latin America in tourism income and noted that it received 6.2 international visitors this year.
“Despite having only been in government for two years, we have already placed (Colombia) in third place with the most tourism income in the region, only behind Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The coal currencies that no longer exist can be replaced. “They are buying in the world, for the foreign exchange of international tourism, simply showing our beauty,” the president said.

The president, who made a speech from a store in the Caribbean city of Santa Marta, stated: “We have exceeded 6.2 million international tourists, which has never happened before, who are arriving in our country in 2024”. In his speech, which he gave after talking with a shopkeeper, Petro spoke of eleven achievements that his Government achieved during 2024, one of which was that “440,000 hectares of land were redistributed from large landowners, from landowners who had it unproductive, to humble peasants.”
“This figure exceeds by 13 times the results of the Government of (his predecessor, Iván) Duque, which only purchased 32,000 hectares, and which is one of the central commitments of the peace agreement (signed with the FARC) of 2016”he detailed. Record cocaine seizures On the other hand, Petro highlighted that this year the Military Forces and the Police achieved a record number when seizing “848 tons” of cocaine, an increase of 14% compared to 2023 and 29% compared to 2022. “Our bet was to stop fumigating farmers, burning their ranches, poisoning their water and crops, but instead focus on seizing the big drug traffickers, their production, and capturing them.”he added.
Likewise, he highlighted that his country had organized the COP16 of biodiversity, held last October in Cali, the main city in southwestern Colombia.
“The entire planet met in Cali to discuss the best way to take care of our planet, the world’s politicians still do not agree, but we showed our nature, habitats, species, people, culture and beauty”he expressed.

He added: “Cali put Colombia in the heart of the world and media and journalists from all over spread that the new image of Colombia is no longer violence, cocaine, barbarism, but the beauty and diversity of this land.”
