The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who has advocated sealing peace with the different paramilitary groups in the country, accused his predecessor, Iván Duque, this Friday of having built the FARC dissidence in his attempt to maintain “the excuse of war”.
“The dissidents were built by Duque, with all the respect he deserves, the policy of destroying the peace process built the dissidents,” Petro assured in statements to the radio station. BluRadio. “The objective was to rebuild the armed FARC so that the excuse of war would continue to exist and they only partially did it, they cheated, they cheated.”
For his part, the Duke himself did not take long to respond to these statements, via Twitter, where he assured: “In my government we fight them, we do not reward them or equate them with the State.”
Petro’s statements come at a time when the new government is in negotiations with the National Liberation Army (ELN) and in which the dissidents of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have shown their willingness to ceasefire.
This same Friday, the commander of the FARC dissidents, alias ‘Iván Mordisco’, whom some had considered dead for months, reappeared in a video announcing their readiness for a ceasefire multilateral agreement with the Colombian government.
“The FARC-EP reaffirms our commitment to acquire with the National government its exploratory phase of engaging in frank dialogues in search of solutions to the social and armed conflict,” said the commander, reading a statement.
Petro, who took over in AugustHe promised to seek “complete peace” by implementing an agreement signed in 2016 with the FARC and speaking with so-called dissidents who reject the pact, as well as with criminal gangs.
