Colombian President Gustavo Petro put on the table Monday his country’s aspiration to be a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027.
Through a video message sent to the High-Level Segment of the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN), which is meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, the president opened his speech by stating that ” The Colombian government has set itself the objective of overcoming violence in order to achieve total peace and good living for the population”.
And the nomination, he pointed out, “is the best way to thank the Human Rights Council and the bodies that surround it,” for the support provided “to strengthen the social rule of law in our country and seek peace.”
Petro underlined some actions that his government has adopted to “safeguard the life and dignity” of Colombians and reported on the creation of the National System of Equality and Equity, which will be led by the Ministry of Equality, whose new focus will be -he stressed- in the fight against drugs based on human rights
He also referred to the “total peace” goals of his government that, according to the president, it is about “generating territorial transformations, overcoming the deficit of economic, social, cultural and environmental rights and putting an end to armed violence, both those of sociopolitical origin, and those that are marked by the irregular security of wealth “.
According to the government, it is the first time, since the creation of this Council in 2006, that Colombia postulates its candidacy. To date it has only served as an observer country.
