() — Colombian President Gustavo Petro apologized to Haiti for the involvement of Colombian citizens in the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.
“Today I apologized to Haiti for the assassination of its president committed by Colombian mercenaries,” Petro said in a tweet Posted on Wednesday night.
Moise was killed in his home on July 7, 2021. According to investigators, 26 Colombians and two Haitian-Americans were involved. The men insisted they were innocent; one of them told at the time: “We were useful idiots to someone else…but we didn’t commit this crime.”
In December 2021, five of the Colombian suspects they told that they are innocent and that they had been tortured and stretched out.
All of the former Colombian soldiers told they were hired as private security and told they were going to provide security for a Haitian presidential candidate.
