The Court of the Supreme Court that judged it reported at the beginning of Thursday’s session that Castillo, 55 years old and who remains in preventive detention, was sent to a hospital for presenting a “decompensation” and to rule out a “hydroelectrolytic disorder and a mild dehydration”.
The Prosecutor’s Office has requested 34 years in prison for the alleged crime of rebellion, after its attempt to dissolve Congress in December 2021 to avoid a vote of dismissal and govern by decree.
Two doctors examined Castillo before he was sent to the hospital and, according to the document that the judges read at the hearing, he was almost an hour connected “to a whey road” in the bed of his cell. He was diagnosed with addition to “a possible conversive syndrome”, which is usually related to emotional stress or problems.
The former president has been in pretrial detention since December 7, 2022, the day he read a speech before the cameras of public television to govern by decree and in which he was not backed by security forces. The former president has described the “Pantomima” trial and has questioned Norma Carbajal, a judge of the court who judges him, for having advanced his opinion. He requested to be replaced.
Castillo has refused to have a legal defense at the trial and his first free lawyer resigned. Now he has two other free lawyers whom he has also rejected. On Tuesday another report from the agency that manages Peruvian prisons indicated that the prosecution doctors had diagnosed Castillo with “a slight dehydration” on the second day of their hunger strike.
The same entity has indicated that Castillo’s hunger strike is an act of indiscipline, according to penitentiary norms, so he sanctioned it with the suspension of visits and isolation.
On Wednesday, the former president requested a precautionary measure to the Inter -American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to order the Peruvian government to cease sanctions, according to Walter Ayala, a former Castillo Minister who was in the last lawyer of the former president.
At the door of the II of Vitarte Hospital, where Castillo was transferred, a dozen supporters listened to the former president, Lilia Paredes, who is not cared for his two children. Paredes said he will not get tired of “fighting and asking international organizations that, please, they say because they are ending the life of a human being.”
The rural professor who came to power in 2021 also faces other investigation in the Prosecutor for acts of alleged corruption during his government, which include irregular promotions within the military ranks and the designation of a consortium to build a bridge without supposedly respecting the foundations of a contest.
