The Peruvian Congress on Thursday rejected two requests for the impeachment of President Dina Boluarte for not reaching the minimum number of votes required in the midst of a political crisis due to the investigation against the president for alleged illicit enrichment.
The first request reached 32 votes and the second 33 when the minimum votes required to admit the request and begin its debate are 48.
The rejection of the two requests occurs in the midst of a crisis unleashed by a preliminary fiscal investigation against the president for the alleged crimes of illicit enrichment and failure to testify to the detriment of the State. The investigation includes the origin of luxury watches and jewelry worth almost half a million dollars and movements of money in her estate worth more than $400,000.
On Friday, Boluarte must show at least three Rolex watches and testify before the attorney general's office after investigators did not obtain his statements at the beginning of last week.
The last weekend The police broke the lock on the door of Boluarte's house and entered the government palace in search of the luxury watches and other evidence in the investigation against him.
If Boluarte were accused of illicit enrichment and failure to testify, she could not be prosecuted until 2026, when her term ends. Officials are obliged to declare their assets and Boluarte's statements do not record any Rolex.
The investigation into the use of the watches began in mid-March when the journalistic program “La Encerrona” stated that it reviewed thousands of official photos and highlighted among all of them a Rolex that in Peru is worth up to $14,000, which triples the salary of the president of 4,200 dollars a month and almost doubles her previous salary as Minister of Social Inclusion of 8,136 dollars a month. Other programs then detected at least two more Rolexes.
