Peru removes police chief accused of criminal organization

The Peruvian government removed the top police chief on Tuesday for allegedly trying to dismantle a group that was investigating former president Pedro Castillo for corruption while he was still in power.

The government of President Dina Boluarte replaced Raúl Alfaro with General Jorge Angulo. In the withdrawal resolution published in the official newspaper El Peruano, it was indicated that there was a conflict of interest because at the same time he was the highest police chief and was being investigated.

Tax documents seen by Associated Press indicate that Alfaro is being investigated for the alleged crime of criminal organization and corruption and for his links with a detained Spanish citizen, Jorge Hernández, who was intelligence adviser to former President Castillo. Alfaro and the foreigner would be part of the alleged criminal network led by Castillo.

Alfaro has been in charge of the Peruvian police since August when then-President Castillo named him chief. Castillo was removed by Congress on December 7 after attempt to dissolve Parliament to avoid a vote to remove him from office.

That same day Castillo was arrested and the justice system imposed three years in pretrial detention while he is being investigated for charges of corruption and criminal organization. as well as another 18 months for rebellion.

Judge Juan Checkley indicated at the beginning of March that there are indications that Castillo would have been involved during his administration (2021-2022) in the purchase of biodiesel for the state oil company Petroperu for which he would have irregularly received $527,000. He would also be involved in an irregular tender for the construction of a bridge in the Amazon.

Castillo began his government on July 28, 2021 and after his departure He was replaced by his vice president, Boluarte, with whom you are estranged Since Castillo left power there have been demonstrations against Boluarte that have left 66 dead, of which 48 are civilians killed in clashes with security forces, according to the Ombudsman’s Office.
