The Free Peru Political Party has requested this Thursday the resignation of the Foreign Minister, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Mackay, after the Peruvian government announced that it was withdrawing recognition of the Saharawi republic.
“Mr. President, Castillo, we demand the dismissal of Rodríguez from the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, because he lives in an era that is outdated and cannot take us, the entire country, to the past,” reads the statement signed by deputy Margot Palacios and signed by the party leader, Vladimir Cerrón.
In this sense, Peru Libre has considered the turn taken by the minister “regrettable”, although they have admitted that “it could be seen coming”, because Rodríguez is “very close to Morocco since before he was appointed”.
Thus, they have reiterated that “the close relationship with the Moroccan monarchy was already known before, unfortunately, Castillo appointed him chancellor.”
“(Mackay) puts the diplomacy of our country in a sad colonialist position: partializing itself with a kingdom that systematically massively violates the Human Rights of the Saharawi people, who have every right to have their own State (…) recognized by all the states of the world”, they denounced.
The Government of Peru withdrew hours before its recognition of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), controlled by the Polisario Front, and appealed to the “territorial integrity” of Morocco, validating the autonomy plan presented by the king, Mohamed VI , for the former Spanish colony.
Lima’s diplomatic shift came after a telephone conversation between its foreign minister, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Mackay, and Morocco’s, Nasser Burita, and just a few days after the new Colombian government, led by Gustavo Petro, resumed its relations with the SADR.
The Peruvian Foreign Ministry has stated in a statement that “it values and respects the integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its national sovereignty, as well as the autonomy plan” of 2017, which does not contemplate in any case the right of self-determination of Western Sahara .
