For a long time, the search engine Google has enjoyed a prominent position in which almost no competitor has managed to challenge it. But the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) What we are experiencing right now is driving a change of panorama. One of the clearest examples of this reality can be found in our daily lives.
While in the past almost all of our searches started from Google, nowadays we also look for information through other means such as ChatGPT or Perplexity. What we have just mentioned will obviously depend on each type of user, but the message is clear: Google is ceasing to be that almost exclusive starting point.
An alternative to Google that builds muscle
Perplexity already processes 100 million queries every week. The information comes to us from Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of the company that has celebrated the achievement in. In the message shared this Friday, they dropped what the next goal they have in mind is: reaching 100 million queries per day. Very, very ambitious, of course.
If we take the figures shared by Srinivas and project them we can calculate around 400 million queries per month. A figure that does not go unnoticed if we take into account that during the month of July, Perplexity processed 250 million queries. This alternative search engine to Google is growing steadily, although it is still far from catching up with Google.
The company led by Sundar Pichai does not provide information about its search metrics. However, HubSpot estimates that the market’s leading search engine processes around 265,000 searches every second. This is something like 22 billion searches a day. A dizzying figure that allows us to get an idea of the dimensions of the search engine.
But if we have learned anything in the technological world, it is that no success is guaranteed over time, no matter how great it may be. The rise of AI has forced Google to take measures including “code red” to continue maintaining its leadership. Among them we have seen generative technology appear in the search box with AI Overview.
At first glance, Perplexity looks a lot like Google. The page welcomes us with a search box, but other elements also appear such as suggested terms. If we find options to focus the results, for example, in videos, publications on social networks or academic documents.
Perplexity offers us a generative response accompanied by its sources and, through a conversational interfaceallows us to go deeper into the information. It also gives us the possibility of transforming our searches into structured pages and even has its own section to discover content.
