September 25 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Pentagon said Wednesday that an Israeli ground offensive in Lebanon does not appear to be “imminent” despite the words of the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Herzi Halevi, who has confirmed that the Army is preparing for a possible incursion against the Shiite party-militia Hezbollah.
“We certainly don’t want to see any action taken that would lead to further escalation in the region. We continue to believe that there is time and space for diplomacy. We want to see a diplomatic resolution and a solution to avoid all-out war,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told a news conference.
In this regard, he explained that there has been an increase in “eye-for-an-eye attacks”, referring to the crossfire between the parties. “We are concerned about a miscalculation,” he stressed, reiterating that they continue to press for a diplomatic resolution.
Singh has denied that Washington is providing military or intelligence assistance to Israel in Lebanon. “And if we were to defend Israel, as we saw in that large-scale attack by Iran, we have positioned forces to do so, but when it comes to Lebanon, the US military has no involvement,” he added.
In recent weeks, Lebanon has seen thousands of communication devices explode, leaving dozens dead and thousands injured, in an incident blamed on Israel; and has later suffered “targeted bombings” against several cities in the country, including the capital, Beirut, which have also left hundreds dead.
The escalation of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran that wields significant military and political clout in Lebanon, has raised fears that the conflict could spread to the Middle East.
