LIMA – Leftist President Pedro Castillo publicly questioned the National Prosecutor, Patricia Benavides, who is investigating him for four alleged cases of corruption during his government.
According to President Castillo, the prosecutor interfered in the investigations in the case of the so-called “White Necks of the Port” by removing a group of prosecutors who are investigating a network of corruption revealed in 2018 involving Peruvian judges and prosecutors.
César Hinostroza, former supreme judge, would have been the head of this organization and is currently on the run from justice in Europe.
“The Peruvian people want to know why the prosecutorial investigation team in the case of ‘The White Necks of the Port’ has been dismantled. I notify the international community of these serious events about which many are silent, ”Castillo wrote on his Twitter account.
The Peruvian president, who completed a year in government a week ago amid high citizen disapproval and a political-economic crisis, is facing investigations for irregular promotions in the Armed Forces in November of last year; an alleged favoring of a company to achieve a contract with the Peruvian state oil company; for the tender for a bridge in the country’s jungle, and for a possible cover-up to avoid capturing government fugitives.
Castillo’s confrontation with the National Prosecutor was repeated this week. The legal defense of the president demanded that the interrogation that was going to take place today in the case of the irregular promotions of the Armed Forces be done at the Government Palace and not at the headquarters of the Public Ministry.
In response, prosecutor Patricia Benavides clarified in an interview with the RPP Noticias station that she could not access the request because Castillo was under investigation. In the end, the castling between both powers culminated with the presentation of the president in the Public Ministry.
“I am not going to submit to media cases, the media has not chosen me; the Peruvian people have chosen me,” Castillo told reporters. “I am not part of, nor am I part of, a criminal network, I have said that today to the Attorney General of the Nation,” she added.
The president decided to remain silent in the face of questions from the Nation’s prosecutor, according to the words of his lawyer, Benji Espinoza, in statements to the press.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Aníbal Torres decided to present his letter of resignation after five months and 25 days in office, the fourth chief of staff to resign in a year in office.
