Turnout in the European elections at 6:00 p.m. is 38.3%. The figure is lower than that recorded in 2019, but that year the call coincided with the holding of municipal and several regional elections, which caused participation to rise to 49.4%. On the other hand, this Sunday’s figure is higher than the 34.1% of the last European elections that were held separately, those of 2014. It is also higher than that of 2009.

The communities in which the most people have already come to vote are Cantabria and Madrid, both with almost 45% participation. On the other hand, the least mobilized at this time are the Canary Islands, Melilla and Ceuta, in this order.

If compared to 2019, participation decreases in all communities. The biggest drop occurs in Melilla, with a decrease of almost 18 points, and Catalunya, with a difference of almost 17 points.

In two hours the polling stations in Spain will close, but the counting data will not be given until 11:00 p.m. because we will have to wait until all the EU member countries have finished voting. Before, we will have projections of the composition of the European Parliament based on national estimates, pre-election surveys or exit polls.

At the end of the day we will have to add the vote by mail, which this year is much higher than in 2014: more than 571,000 people have already voted by mail compared to the 282,172 who chose this way in the elections to the European Parliament held on May 25 2014. By communities, those that have received the most votes by mail are Madrid, Andalusia and Catalunya.
