Paris (AFP) – According to the Mayor’s Office of the French capital, ten thousand tons of garbage accumulated this Friday in the streets of Paris, as part of a strike by garbage collectors against the unpopular pension reform of President Emmanuel Macron. The French government approved the final text on Thursday through a decree, 49.3, which exempted it from a vote in the National Assembly. A decision that has deepened discontent in France.

Rubbish is piled up in different corners of Paris. According to the new estimate, up from 7,600 tons at the beginning of the week, it comes after Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said the requisitions were working. This is a mechanism that makes it possible to force a part of the strikers to return to work to prevent a blockade of the economy.

“From today, from this morning, this requisition works and allows this garbage to be collected,” said Darmanin for the ‘RTL’ chain.

Some statements that contrast with those of the environment of the socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo, who indicated that “no truck left the public side.”

The municipal employees of the garbage collection service began a strike 12 days ago and the blockade of the city’s incinerators in protest against Macron’s project, which stipulates that the retirement age will go from 62 to 64 years.

These guarantee the collection of half of the 20 districts of the capital, while the rest is in charge of private companies. The latter continued to work and some signed contracts to clean up the affected areas.

“We have not had any trucks in the districts with public collection,” confirmed Delphine Bürkli, mayor of the IX district, who asked to mobilize the “Army to clear the streets.”

The workers in this sector consulted by the AFP news agency are determined to continue their strike until Monday. And they reiterated their discontent with the approval by decree of the pension reform.

On Thursday the Government of Emmanuel Macron approved the text with the activation of article 49.3 of the Constitution. A decision that has been strongly criticized by the opposition within Parliament and also from the streets of the country.

The anger of the garbage collectors is latent. “Garbage collectors have 12 years less life expectancy and sewage employees seven years less,” said Frédéric Aubisse, a 54-year-old sewer worker. And he added that the two more years of work stipulated by the reform will worsen the situation.

“We are going to die on the job,” he added.
