First modification:
Vice President Hugo Velázquez decided to remain in his position, despite the fact that last week he had stated that he would resign after being sanctioned by the United States, which accused him of “significant corruption,” according to what he himself indicated.
Paraguayan Vice President Hugo Velázquez said he will not resign and dismissed Washington’s complaints as “unfounded accusations.” He will now wait to receive “official information,” he added.
The US embassy is very active in Paraguay lately. In less than a month, he broadcast two pieces of news at a press conference. Something unusual.
He did so to announce that the White House considers former President Horacio Cartes and current Vice President Hugo Velázquez to be “significantly corrupt.”
Both politicians belong to the right-wing Colorado Party, a party that has governed that South American country almost continuously for more than 70 years.
Both Velázquez and Cartes were accused of using their power and money to disrupt corruption and money laundering investigations.
However, a week ago, minutes after the US ambassador finished his speech, Paraguayan Vice President Hugo Velázquez connected with Monumental radio, the most listened to, to announce his resignation from his post.
Velázquez also said that he was abandoning the internal race of his party – which in December must elect a presidential candidate.
“It is my obligation to step aside,” he declared then.
