() — Mari Carmen Aponte presented this Wednesday a copy of her credentials as US ambassador to Panama before Foreign Minister Janaina Tewainey at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of that country.
The diplomat and lawyer, of Puerto Rican origin, was confirmed in office at the end of last September by the US Senate.
The last US ambassador that Panama had had was John Feeley, who resigned in 2018 due to differences with the management of Donald Trump. Since then, no other has been named to replace him.
Upon her arrival at Tocumen International Airport, Mari Carmen Aponte expressed that “Panama is very important to the US. Our bilateral relationship is extremely important. I am here to underline that relationship and strengthen it.”
Aponte is the first woman of Puerto Rican origin to serve as US ambassador. She previously held the position in El Salvador, according to information from the US Embassy in Panama.
