Palestinian Authority stresses that Israeli ban on UNRWA is a violation of International Law

Hamas says “liquidating” Palestinians’ right to return to homes from which they were displaced is “part of its aggression”

Oct. 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The spokesman for the Presidency of the Palestinian Authority, Nabil abú Rudeina, stressed this Monday that the approval by the Israeli Parliament of the law that prohibits all activities of the United Nations Refugee Agency in the Near East (UNRWA) both in Israel and in the Palestinian territories is a violation of International Law and represents a challenge to UN resolutions.

Abu Rudeina has stated that this decision aims to eliminate the issue of refugees and their right to return to their territories and receive compensation. “It not only goes against (Palestinian) refugees, but also against the United Nations and the world that made the decision to create UNRWA,” according to a statement collected by the Palestinian news agency WAFA.

“The vote of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) on this resolution by an overwhelming majority indicates the transformation of Israel into a fascist state, and that this is no longer limited to a number of ministers, but to the so-called State of Israel,” he said. , before adding that the world must treat Israel as a racist state and withdraw its international legitimacy.

In this sense, the presidential spokesperson has maintained that if it had not been for the “continuous” US political, financial and military support for the occupation, he would not have dared to challenge the international community and adopt policies that “have flooded” the region. with violence and instability.

Faced with this situation, he has called on the international community to adopt “practical” positions in the face of “this dangerous Israeli legislation” that violates International Law. “The Palestinian people and their leaders will not allow the approval of occupation plans that will not resolve the issue of Palestinian refugees,” he concluded.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry, which has also condemned the parliamentary approval of the measure, has stressed through its profile on the social network X that Israel does not have sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territories and that the work of UNRWA “is welcome.” on the basis of the agreement between the State of Palestine and the international organization itself.

“It also confirms that these laws constitute a threat to the work of UNRWA and its role in the occupied Palestinian territory, including Jerusalem, as the law seeks to prohibit the work of the agency. It constitutes “an attack on the international presence in Palestine, and threatens the fate of the basic services that UNRWA provides to Palestinian refugees, especially in light of the war of genocide against the Palestinian people,” he denounced.

The ministerial portfolio has indicated that these laws “are part of Israel’s systematic strategy to dismantle the agency’s work as a witness to the Nakba crime committed against the Palestinian people, and to put an end to the issue of Palestinian refugees and their right to return to their homes in accordance with the General Assembly Resolution”. He has also considered that they are “illegal, null and void.”

On the other hand, the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has “strongly rejected and condemned” the vote “of the Zionist enemy”, since it considers that “liquidating” its cause and the right of the Palestinians to return to their homes “of the who were forcibly displaced by the Zionists” is “part of their aggression” against the Palestinian people, as reported by the Palestinian newspaper ‘Filastin’, linked to the group.

A total of 92 of the 120 deputies of the unicameral Israeli Parliament have supported the initiative, while ten have voted against. Opposition parties such as Yesh Atid, the National Unity Party and Yisrael Beiteinu have also voted in favor of the proposal. For his part, the commissioner general of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, has reacted to the approval of the law with a warning that it represents a “dangerous precedent” and that “only deepens the suffering of the Palestinians.
