Oxfam accuses Israel of forcing Palestinians into a "death trap" in Gaza

4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The NGO Oxfam Intermón has accused the Israeli authorities of violating international law by demanding that a quarter of a million people leave eastern Khan Yunis in order to continue their military offensive, given that these people have no “safe” place to go but are forced to end up in a “death trap.”

Israel has designated a theoretical “humanitarian zone” which, according to a statement from Oxfam, is in fact one of the most densely populated displacement areas in the world, with hardly any resources. The NGO’s staff even speak of “medieval conditions”, with people camping out in the streets and without basic hygiene.

For Oxfam’s Middle East director, Sally Abi Khalil, Israel is committing “an outrage” and “paying no attention to the safety or dignity” of the Gazan population. These areas, she warned, are neither humanitarian nor safe, but “the polar opposite.”

The organisation has called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire so that Gazans can receive aid, as well as the release of both the hostages and those Palestinians detained “illegally” by Israeli forces. “The human cost of the military offensive in Gaza is unacceptable and we call on all parties to press for an end to the bloodshed and suffering,” said Oxfam’s regional representative.
