Canada has summoned the Chinese ambassador, Cong Peiwu, this Thursday to express his disagreement with Beijing after Canadian Intelligence stated the day before that deputy Michael Chong has suffered an alleged campaign of harassment by a Chinese diplomat accredited in the country .
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said Thursday on her Twitter profile that Ottawa “will not tolerate any form of political interference.” “All options are on the table as we weigh the consequences of this behavior,” she added.
Specifically, a diplomat at the Toronto consulate in China, Zhao Wei, would have played an important role in the harassment and threats against Chong and his family, who, however, has criticized the government for its tepid response to the diplomatic crisis.
“This individual, Zhao Wei, should be on the first plane or be declared persona non grata,” Chong stressed, adding that Ottawa is putting up “a giant billboard so that all authoritarian states” can interfere on Canadian soil.
The Canadian Intelligence Agency revealed on Thursday that different officials from Beijing have traveled to Canada with the aim of intimidating Canadians with Chinese nationality and permanent residents to return to the Asian giant.
He also assured in his report that the private conversations of the deputies and senators would have been monitored by “foreign states” in the framework of the 2021 elections. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeayu already accused Beijing in November of interfering aggressive” in the electoral processes of Canada.
