Oscars 2023 Recap: Winners and Speeches

They are mythical and perhaps you have heard of them at some point. You may have even seen them. And since a new ceremony is coming up, here we have a list of the most awarded films at the Oscars since its creation in 1925(when the ticket to attend the awards ceremony cost US$ 5).

Returning to the topic, three films in the history of the Oscars have won the largest number of golden statuettes, with 11 awards. One more has taken 10 awards and three other 9 golden statuettes.

Ben Hur (1959) — 11 Oscars

Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Stephen Boyd, among others, star in this drama directed by William Wyler in which a Jewish prince is betrayed by his friend, a Roman, and ends up working as a slave. The prince then returns to take revenge.

This 1959 film is one of the most awarded in history with 11 golden statuettes out of 12 nominations at the 32nd Academy Awards.

Ben-Hur won Best Actor (Charlton Heston), Best Supporting Actor (Hugh Griffith), Best Director (William Wyler), Best Editing (Ralph E. Winters and John D. Dunning) and Best Picture, among others.

Titanic (1997) — 11 Oscars

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet star in this drama directed by James Cameronin which an upper-class young woman falls in love with a poor artist aboard the luxurious ship RMS Titanic, the famous ship that sank on its maiden voyage in April 1912. (The wreckage of the ship was found at the bottom of the ocean to a depth of 3,600 meters in the North Atlantic Ocean decades later).

At the gala night in Hollywood, the film was awarded 11 statuettes out of 14 nominations it received (it’s one of the most nominated films in Academy Award history). The awards it won were, among others, Best Film, Best Director (James Cameron), Best Costume Design (Deborah Lynn Scott), Best Sound (Gary Rydstrom, Tom Johnson, Gary Summers, Mark Ulano), Best Original Song , among others.

Kate Winslet was nominated for Best Leading Actress, but did not win an Oscar on that occasion; Gloria Stuart (who played the elderly Rose), was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, but did not win the statuette either.
