Orbán jokes that the detained MEPs will "soon" be able to form a soccer team

Jan. 18 () –

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, has ironized this Wednesday with the investigations opened in the European Parliament for an alleged bribery plot, affirming that “soon” the detained MEPs will be enough to form a soccer team.

“At this rate, there will soon be enough corrupt MEPs behind bars to form their own soccer team in prison. Who knows? They may try to reach Euro 2024,” said Orbán, who has not lost any opportunity since the scandal broke to point out the alleged excesses in Brussels.

Since the Qatar bribery scandal broke out in December, the Hungarian prime minister has used it to make ugly the alleged corruption of institutions that have been pointing fingers at Hungary for years for its alleged setbacks in terms of the rule of law.

The Belgian Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that the former socialist MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, the main defendant in the plot, will provide details about the ‘modus operandi’, the countries involved and the names of those who succumbed to the corruption to the Belgian Justice, by virtue of a Agreement reached in exchange for reduced sentence.
