Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane calls for new protests after his return to Mozambique

MADRID Jan 12 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The opposition candidate for the Presidency of Mozambique, Venancio Mondlane, has called for new protests for next week, coinciding with the inauguration of the new president, the ruling party Daniel Chapo, and in the context of the demonstrations for alleged electoral fraud that have caused at least 294 deaths.

Mondlane returned to Maputo, the capital, last Thursday, after almost three months of self-imposed exile during which he led protests against the election results that he rejected as fraudulent, and about which international observers raised serious doubts.

Although Mondlane has urged his supporters to demonstrate peacefully, there are fears of renewed violence as police have frequently responded violently against protesters, especially in the capital.

The riots have already resulted in at least 294 deaths, most from police shooting, according to the Decide Electoral Platform, a local NGO.

On Thursday morning, after the opponent’s return, the agents dispersed a rally in support of Mondlane with shots and tear gas, who has addressed his supporters to once again insist that he will go to the last consequences to reverse the fraud. electoral that occurred in the last elections.

The instigator of the protests has declared himself the winner of the elections. Throughout these weeks he has insisted on his idea of taking office on January 15, the day on which Daniel Chapo will be sworn into office, although in recent weeks he has shown himself willing to negotiate.

The candidate of the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), Chapo, won the October 9 elections with 65 percent of the votes, well ahead of the 24 percent obtained by Mondlane who, according to his own figures, would have won with just over 53 percent.
