BRUSSELS, May 23. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Operation ‘Atalanta’, the EU naval mission that fights against piracy in the Indian Ocean, assisted this Thursday a Liberian-flagged merchant ship, the ‘Basilisk’, which issued an alert for a possible pirate attack near Somalia.

“The alleged attack took place while the ship was sailing approximately 380 nautical miles (611 kilometers) east of Mogadishu, Somalia, heading north,” he explained in a statement dated Rota (Cádiz), adding that a ship from the operation was “the first actor to respond.”

Likewise, it has indicated that it is taking “appropriate measures to respond effectively and promptly to this alert.” The operation has also reaffirmed his role “as a key actor in maritime security”, being a “reference in the fight against piracy during the last 15 years in the Western Indian Ocean.”

‘Atalanta’ was launched by the European Union in 2008 to prevent pirate attacks against European ships off the coast of Somalia. It is currently led by Spain, which has the frigate ‘Victoria’ deployed in the area as part of the European Naval Force (Eunavfor, for its acronym in English).
