OpenAI will use Reddit data to train its AI

During the meeting with its investors last March, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman pointed out that the paradox of the moment around the AI ​​boom is that while there is more content written by machines, the content coming from real people is more valuable “and we have almost two decades of authentic conversation.”

“Reddit has become one of the largest open archives of authentic, relevant and up-to-date human conversations on the internet. Including it in ChatGPT maintains our belief of a connected network, helping people find what they are looking for and find a community,” Huffman said of the agreement.

How much is the deal between OpenAI and Reddit worth?

Neither company disclosed the financial terms of the agreement nor did they provide details on what data will be used to train the AI ​​models. However, other alliances have demonstrated the high value of Reddit data.

In the data it presented for its Initial Public Offering, the platform revealed that it has contracts with companies to license its data, including Google, which is worth more than $200 million.

And it has more than 1,000 million publications and more than 16,000 million comments, which are quite attractive for generative AI companies that want to make experiences much closer to the human experience.

Although the company’s shares rose 11% after the agreement with OpenAI was announced, the platform has been criticized by users, who do not approve of their conversations being used, but also by the fact that Sam Altman , CEO of OpenAI, has an 8.7% stake in Reddit.

This figure makes him the third largest shareholder in the company and he is even still a member of the board of directors. However, the two parties reported that the association was approved by “the independent board of directors.”
