Jan Leike announced on Friday on the social network resignationciting fundamental disagreements with senior management about the company’s priorities, in a dilemma between innovation and security.
“We have reached a breaking point,” said Leike, who was in charge of the group responsible for the “Superalignment.” This team aimed to ensure that a future “general AI”, which could become as intelligent as humans, is aligned with society’s values.
Yesterday was my last day as head of alignment, superalignment lead, and executive @OpenAI.

According to Bloomberg, this team will be disbanded and its members will be integrated into other research groups within OpenAI that also work on AI security.
Leike urged all of the startup’s employees to “act with the gravity” that justifies the magnitude of what they are building.
Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of the San Francisco-based company, expressed sadness at Leike’s departure. “You are right, we still have a lot to do in terms of alignment and safety research, and we are determined to do it,” he added.
The “Superalignment” team was also led by Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI, who announced his departure on Tuesday.
OpenAI has been a pioneer in the generative AI revolution with the launch of ChatGPT, a tool capable of producing content from simple requests in everyday language. This innovation has excited Silicon Valley, but has also raised concerns among analysts and regulators around the world, due to issues of security and data use.
This week, OpenAI presented a new version of its chatbot, which can now maintain fluid oral conversations with users, moving towards increasingly personal and powerful AI assistants.
Relevance of OpenAI in the market
OpenAI has established itself as a leader in the development of advanced artificial intelligence, particularly in the field of generative AI. With ChatGPT, the company has made a significant impact by offering a tool that makes it easy to create content through natural language interactions, something that has transformed multiple industries from customer service to education.
However, this leadership position also carries considerable responsibility in terms of ensuring the security and ethical alignment of its technologies. Recent high-profile departures within the company underscore the internal challenges OpenAI faces as it tries to balance rapid innovation with the need to implement robust safeguards.
As OpenAI continues to evolve, its ability to navigate these complexities will be crucial to maintaining its influence and trust in the global AI market.
