According to the Russian Defense Ministry in its daily report on Sunday, Ukrainian troops tried to advance from the south of Donetsk, Zaporiya and near the city of Artiomovsk. However, “thanks to the courageous and determined actions of the small units of the ‘Vostok’ troop group all the attacks were repulsed,” according to the Russian report.
Ukrainian targets destroyed include at least seven German-made Leopard tanks and five American-made Bradley vehicles. Several Russian bloggers – according to Reuters – reported that, despite the Russian counter-attack, Ukraine managed to break a section of the Russian lines south of the town of Velyka Novosilka, briefly taking several villages while Russian forces withdrew to a higher ground.
kyiv troops said on Sunday they had recovered a village of Russian forces in southeastern Ukraine, the first liberated settlement they have claimed since they launched a counter-attack this week. Soldiers raised the Ukrainian flag at a bombed-out building in an unverified video released by the 68 jaeger brigade of Ukraine, which identified the settlement as Blahodatne in the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged on Saturday that his army was involved in “defensive and counter-offensive operations,” a day after President Vladimir Putin said Russia had repelled the offensive’s first attacks. In just 48 hours, Valeryi Shershen – spokesman for Ukraine’s ‘Tavria’ military sector – announced on television that they were “watching the first results of the counteroffensive actionsa”. Specifically, he pointed to a village located on the border of the Donetsk and Zaporizhzia regions, a few kilometers south of the kyiv-controlled village of Velyka Novosilka.
“We are driving the enemy out of our homelands. It’s the warmest feeling there is. Ukraine is going to win, Ukraine above all else,” an unidentified soldier said on Facebook.

Russia, by contrast, maintains that on at least two occasions it has managed to repel Ukrainian attacks near the nearby settlement of Velyka Novosilka, over the past week.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have withstood more than a dozen Ukrainian attacks last Saturday in three main directions, as well as having destroyed a column of armored vehicles from the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade in the Zaporiya region. “During the last day, the Ukrainian armed forces continued unsuccessful attempts at offensive actions in the Donetsk, South Donetsk and Zaporiya directions,” they noted in the daily report published on Sunday.
Like the Ukrainian troops, Vladimir Rogov, a Russian official stationed in the Zaporiya region, said Russian forces recaptured a village.

Sergei Aksionov, the leader of Crimea, announced last Saturday that Russian air defense systems shot down two ballistic missiles launched by Ukraine over the Russian-annexed peninsula. “In the morning, the air defense forces shot down two Ukrainian Grom-2 ballistic missiles“, Aksiónov specified in his Telegram account and explained that there were no victims or injuries as a result of the attack. According to local authorities, in recent weeks there have been several massive attacks with drones and missiles.
The occupied southeast is seen as a likely priority for kyiv forces who may aim to threaten Russia’s land bridge to the annexed Crimean peninsula and split Russian forces in half.
