Nicolas Cage has a reputation as an excessive actor prone to lag, which is not entirely fair. It is true that his abundant filmography is prone to nonsense, especially in recent years, but we must not forget that when he wants, he can make films in which he is contained and exciting, as in the recent and unclassifiable ‘Dream Scenario’. Or in this ‘Pig‘ which is now coming to Prime Video.
In it, Cage leaves aside his typical and hilarious outbursts of rage that have given us such good moments in major pieces of recent cinema like ‘Mandy’, and immerses himself in a film about grief and loss as slow and thoughtful as its own performance. Cage composes a character full of subtleties, where he shows a peculiar mix of vulnerability and harsh contradictions.
In ‘Pig’, Cage plays a former renowned chef who lives like a hermit in the forests of Oregon, with the only company of his truffle pig. When it is stolen, Rob must return to Portland and confront his past to get it back. The city’s unusual underground network of intrigue and gastronomic powers lead him to recover some lost ties to its history, and he will forge a strange friendship with Amir, a young truffle merchant.
At times ghostly when it portrays a city through which Cage moves like a ghost looking for the only thing that matters to him, at times genuinely emotional when the journey forces him to reconcile with the wounds of his past, ‘Pig’ is not the excess that Nicolas Cage has us accustomed to. Or maybe yes: an excess of emotion, raw feelings and pigs with a very deep meaning.
