Official visit to Thailand by the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan

On June 26, 2024, HE Mr. Srettha ThavisinPrime Minister of Thailand, welcomed HE Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan, and his spouse, during their official visit to Thailand between 25-28 June 2024.

Both sides welcomed the close bilateral ties at all levels, with the special bond between the two Royal Families as a solid foundation. The visit marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and aims to enhance cooperation in potential areas of mutual interest.

In terms of trade and investment, both sides expressed their commitment to expanding trade volume and increasing investment opportunities through the early completion of the Thailand-Bhutan FTA. Comprehensive discussions were held on investment prospects in the Gelephu Consciousness City (GMC) Project, the Special Administrative Zone of Bhutan.

The Prime Minister of Bhutan also extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to visit Bhutan to explore trade and investment opportunities.

On this occasion, both sides agreed to foster people-to-people relations through the promotion of tourism, especially considering that the Bhutanese consider Thailand as their preferred travel destination for medical tourism and education.

The Prime Minister of Bhutan also expressed his gratitude to the Royal Thai Government for providing assistance to Bhutan in capacity building and human resource development through scholarships, training programmes and various projects such as the One Gewog One Product (OGOP) Development Project and the first living donor kidney transplant surgeries under the collaboration between Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) and Rajavithi Hospital.

Both sides expressed their commitment to expanding trade volume and increasing investment opportunities through the prompt processing of the FTA.

Furthermore, the official visit culminated with the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), namely, (1) Memorandum of Understanding for Academic Cooperation and Faculty Exchange between the Department of Medical Services, Ministry of Public Health, Thailand and Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences, Bhutan, and (2) Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Tourism between the Department of Tourism, Royal Government of Bhutan, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Management (Public Organization), Royal Government of Thailand.
