Nov. 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –

An officer from the Yongsan District Police Station in Seoul was found dead this Friday while being investigated in connection with the deadly stampede that claimed the lives of 156 people at a Halloween party held in the Korean capital. from the south.

The officer, 55 years old and surnamed Jeong, was found dead at 12:45 p.m. (local time) at his home, located in northern Seoul, according to the Yonhap agency.

The police station to which the agent belonged, along with the fire station and the Itaewon district office – where the deadly stampede took place – have been the subject of an investigation on suspicions that they did not respond as they should before the calls that warned of the danger hours before the death of more than 150 people on October 29.

Jeong was being investigated after suspects pointed him out for having ordered the elimination of an internal intelligence report that gave prior warnings of the then possible security accident, all in an alleged attempt to cover up the inaction, according to the aforementioned agency.

The charges against him include abuse of authority, destruction of evidence and professional negligence resulting in the death of dozens of people.

However, Jeong would have sent messages with his mobile suggesting his suicide to some co-workers, as detailed by local authorities. Police are investigating the circumstances of his death.
